Hello there! Yes, it’s that time once again and also the first time this year where I look back at the music I played in the previous month. What a great start to the year that was, music wise. There are a lot of promising new albums out or due to be out soon and I can’t stop myself from playing them. This month I have also played a lot of old classic music, courtesy of Apple Music, so it will be interesting to see if it has made any impact on my chart stats for January. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the Top 10 artists…
So Cher has gone straight to the top this month, I have been listening to many of her past albums recently. Cher had some fantastic and overlooked material in the 1960’s and 1970’s and it’s been great to hear her in her earlier times. The beauty of Apple Music is that I have now imported these albums into my iTunes library to sit with all of her other back catalogue which I have gathered together over the years. Cher had a total of 124 plays last month.
Also in the Top 10 we see returns of Ed Sheeran, The xx and Goldfrapp. All three of these acts have new albums out this year, with The xx having theirs already out. I am so hyped to hear the other two albums when they are both released in March and as you can tell I have been listening to a lot of their back catalogue in preparation.
The other acts featured were also there in December, apart from Elvis Presley who, like Cher, has had many plays because of my interest in delving into the history books of many artists and finding so many albums and LPs to listen from many years back. I never knew how many Elvis songs there were that I knew and loved. It has been great adding these songs to my iTunes collection as well.
The xx have had the most played album of January 2017, with their third studio album “I See You”. This is a fantastic album which is great when you want to zone out and relax and features some great production and vocals. I would imagine this album will get a lot of nods at next year’s award ceremonies (it’s too late for this year) and may even appear on the Mercury Album Awards shortlist too. I would recommend you go and listen to it right now as it is a fantastic album. The album received 71 plays this month.
Also featured is OneRepublic once again, climbing back up to #3 with their album “Oh My My”. Am I ever going to start getting sick of this album? The album is filled to the brim with accessible songs that you can’t help but leave on and listen to, so it comes as no surprise really.
Ed Sheeran hasn’t officially released this third studio album “÷” (“Divide”) yet but already it is in my Top 10 most played albums. How!? Well, because two songs from it have been released already and they are just so good that they have been played numerous times, the album has entered my Top 10 based on two songs alone, impressive right? I would imagine by the time it is officially released in March it will also make another appearance in the Top 10 as well, but it may face tough competition from the new Goldfrapp album due around the same time.
We also see the new albums from The Weeknd, Kungs and Måns Zelmerlöw enter the Top 10 too, all of which are worth checking out as well.
So here are my Top 10 most played tracks of January 2017. As you can see, there are two Ed Sheeran tracks featured, both of them being his new singles from his upcoming third studio album “÷”. Louis Tomlinson (along with Steve Aoki) has climbed up to #2 with his mega hit “Just Hold On” which I just can’t get enough of.
Also in the Top 10 this month we have a few Eurovision themed tracks. Sitting at #3 is a song which was released all the way back in 2014 by dutch girl group (they’re sisters) O’G3NE (pronounced O-Gene) called “Magic”. I have become obsessed with the song since discovering their back catalogue, you may be interested to know that the girl group will be representing The Netherlands in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. At #7 we also have another girl group called Darline, who took part in the UK Eurovision selection last year. They have recently released their new single “Fall Deep” which has been racking up the plays. Last, but not least, and in at #10 this month is, in fact, the UK entry into Eurovision this year by the singer Lucie Jones. You can find out more on what I think about the entry by checking out another blog of mine here.
Don’t forget you can check out all of the music videos on YouTube by clicking play on the following playlist, what do you think of the featured songs?
So that’s it for this month, join me again on March 1st when I will be looking back at the big hits of February 2017. I wonder what exciting musical treats are in store for us this month.
