2016: A Year In Music (Tracks)

2016 is very much almost over, and throughout the course of today I will be unveiling the most played Artists, Albums and Tracks of 2016 in my Last.FM music statistics. Basically, what music have I been listening to the most? Well, here we go…

So here we are, the final blog of the day and this is the big one. What songs have I been listening to the most during 2016? There have been so many great songs out this year but the plays have all been counted and verified and we have ten songs that are the ultimate songs of 2016 in my opinion.

Before we get started on that though, a few stats for you. This year alone I have listened to 17,634 different songs and in total I have played music 80,870 times. That amount includes any song, listened to and gives me a total average of 221 plays per day. I listen to music using iTunes and Apple Music mainly, but also via YouTube, iOS devices, Spotify, Plex and more recently the radio which you can now scrobble to Last.FM too. Last.FM, of course, being the site where all of these statistics are brought together and gives me a comprehensive listening history to look back on. It is a fantastic site, and if you are not a member but are a music lover, you should get signed up straight away.

So before we look at the Top 10, let’s take a look at some of the songs which did not quite hit the Top 10 this year but are still worth a checking out when you can.

So here we go then, here is the full Top 10 tracks of 2016…

#10 OneRepublic – Kids (154 plays)

Kicking off the Top 10 countdown then is the song “Kids” by the American genre-less band OneRepublic. This song is such a bop and is so catchy, it has also featured in my monthly rundowns for three months consecutively between September – November. I couldn’t get enough of this song, and even to this day I am still playing the hell out of it. Here is the video:

Britney Spears – Make Me… (159 plays)

Britney Spears has made one big comeback to the music world this year, this was the lead single from her recent album “Glory”. This song was also performed at the MTV VMA’s this year in August, and was said to be one of Britney’s best performances at the show. The song also features the rapper G-Eazy who performed with Britney at the show. There were some groans about the music video though, as it is said that the original dance show version of the video was scrapped for this one, where she is seen lining up a load of men to be in her music:

#8 Rihanna – Work (168 plays)

Rihanna made a comeback this year too with her recent album, her first one released since 2012. This was also the lead single from that album, also featuring the rapper Drake on vocals. The song became so addictive, despite my intitial reservations at the time (I posted on Twitter how I really didn’t like it!). I think it was her performance at the BRIT Awards in February which won me over, it was a stunning performance and hearing the live version of the song made it much more of an earworm for me. Here is the original video in it’s 7 minute glory for you all to enjoy:

#7 Amir – J’ai Cherché (170 plays)

This is the first of four Eurovision entries inside the Top 10 this year. This song was a big, strong entry from France in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest and saw them also win a Top 10 placing in the show itself. This song is upbeat, comprises both English and French lyrics and features a very charming and handsome singer. A winning combination I would say, however it didn’t end up winning the show. I really hope France sends something in a similar vein next year as well, after all, the results certainly paid off. Here is the original video:

#6 Justs – Heartbeat (172 plays)

So another Eurovision entry now, this time is the entry from Latvia. I absolutely love this song and have done since it’s initial release back in February of this year. I love the electronica used in this song, like the beat sounds so slick and cool. I also love the singer’s vocals and he sings the song with so much conviction, I had it down as a potential winner on the night, but sadly it wasn’t to be. Never mind though, I still can’t get enough of this song and it has been on heavy rotation all year.

#5 Calvin Harris – This Is What You Came For (186 plays)

I know what you are thinking, that’s a familiar face you are seeing right there. Yes, this is the song that featured Rihanna on vocals and made a smash out of this song. Did you know that this was also written by Taylor Swift too? There was a big hoo-hah about that on Twitter earlier this year, when Calvin Harris denied that Taylor had written part of the song. You may remember that Calvin and Taylor were also dating earlier this year and split just before the release of this song. Drama aside, it is a fantastic dance track and was one of my soundtracks to the summer.

#4 Justin Timberlake – Can’t Stop The Feeling! (188 plays)

Another huge summer smash here, this was such an addictive song and very uplifting when it came out in May 2016. This song also has a Eurovision connection for me as Justin Timberlake was a special guest at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest and performed this song during the interval act. I absolutely loved it and whenever I think of this song, not any of the Eurovision songs funnily enough, I am brought straight back to Stockholm in Sweden during the Eurovision season and all of the fun times I had. I really hope that we will get another album from Mr. Timberlake next year as well.

#3 All Saints – One Strike (230 plays)

Before I get started on this song, it is worth pointing out just how close the Top 3 was this year. At one point, just earlier this month, all three songs had the same amount of plays and I had no idea who was going to come out on top. Anyway, at #3 it is the almighty All Saints who have had a triumphant return to the music fold this year. If you have been reading my end-of-year blogs so far you will know that they have managed to be my #2 most played artist, my #1 most played album and now have the honour of being #3 most played track with the lead single from their latest album, “One Strike”. This song has similarities to their earlier William Orbit produced material such as “Pure Shores” and “Black Coffee” and I absolutely love it, I just wish it was more commercially successful for them. Then again, who needs sales? Here is the official video:

#2 Jamala – 1944 (233 plays)

#2 now and only three plays higher, it’s the winner of this years Eurovision Song Contest. A surprise winner in my opinion, but a good winner all the same. This song took a lot of warming up for me, I really wasn’t so keen on it when I first heard it, but in the weeks leading up to the contest it really grew on me and her vocals are completely out of this world as well. You may remember the very nerve-wracking results as they came in at the Eurovision final, Ukraine weren’t looking like they were going to win it until right at the very end, when Russia didn’t get enough points to overtake them. I personally cannot wait to see the 2017 contest next year, to be held in Kiev, Ukraine. I won’t be there in person but my love for the contest has not died and only gets stronger and stronger as each year goes on. Which country is going to win the show next year?

Here we go then, this is my #1 most played song of 2016. I hope you are ready for this…

#1 Sergey Lazarev – You Are The Only One (236 plays)

Yes, a Eurovision song is my most played song of the year. Surprise, Surprise! Although, saying that, last year this wasn’t the case so it’s not as common as you may think. This is the Russian entry at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest and like I previously mentioned, they were looking all set to win the thing (they had the highest amount of votes from the public), they just missed out and didn’t have enough points to beat both Ukraine and Australia. Nevertheless, this is a fantastic song and is right up my street. Again, this is an upbeat, catchy, contemporary song sung by a charismatic singer who is very pleasing on the eye. This song has also had the most amount of plays in one month, you may remember that this was my most played song back in March 2016 with 91 plays in that month alone. I couldn’t get enough of playing it around the time of Eurovision, and even to this day it is such a great song to listen to. The pulsating rhythm throughout the song is actually really addictive and makes for a great workout tune too, give it a try! So for one final time, let’s have a look at the official video for this song. I can’t believe we are at the end of the countdown already.

There you have it, that was my 2016 in music. What a fantastic year it has been, I can’t believe that it is mere hours now until it is all over.
