Music of the Month – March 2016

Here it is then, the final ever Music of the Month blog. Yes, sadly this is it, the end. After today I will not be doing any more MOTM blogs, unfortunately. I have got to the point where I no longer wish to share my listening habits with my readers. Pfft, who am I kidding? That was my lame attempt at an April Fool’s joke peeps, yeah not great. Although did I tell you that I am through to the next stage of the X Factor auditions?

Anyway, back on subject. It’s the first of the month, which means it’s time to listen to lots of new music (I basically update my collection at the beginning of the month, importing new albums etc into my iTunes) and also reflect on the music that I have been listening to in the previous month.

March was an exciting month for me musically, I mean we had the Melodifestivalen final which spawned many banging tunes, there were a ton of Eurovision song reveals, All Saints have officially got on the comeback wagon and Mariah Carey was amazing live. So which of them have been listened to the most?

All Saints were #1 this month with 114 plays.

So starting off, it’s of course the Artist of the month. This month, it was all about the big comeback from the girl group All Saints. All Saints were massive in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and along with the Spice Girls, I was a huge fan of their music. They split up in 2001 after a dispute over a jacket (yes it’s true, it’s been well documented) and made a very brief comeback in 2006 when they reunited for another album, although in their own words, this was basically done for the money and nothing else. The album “Studio 1” released in late 2006 also failed to do well commercially, and back then they were signed by a major record label who were expecting a big investment, but it wasn’t to be. The album was fantastic though, even if it was rushed, and I still have a great fondness for it even now. Roll on 2014, when All Saints get back together by pure chance, and enjoyed each others company for once, going back on tour and then deciding in 2015 to start recording again. The result is their brand new album, to be called “Red Flag”, but it’s not even out yet! It’s officially released on April 8th in the UK, but already it has also rocketed to the top of my Album of the Month list. How? You ask, well it’s because individual plays count as plays for the album, and I have listened the hell out of the two released songs from it so far, more on that in a bit though. So, for now, let’s celebrate All Saints being back together with this classic performance. I have also bought tickets to go and see them on tour (yes, they are touring this time around!) in October and I am crazy excited about it.

A quick shout out there to Mariah Carey also, who was a very close #2 last month. I have been listening to load of her back catalogue since seeing her live at The O2. You can read more about that on my previous blog, but in a nutshell she was bloody brilliant and I am so glad that I got to see the diva in person.

Red Flag is the new album by All Saints. Click to listen.

Right then, so Album of the Month. It is of course “Red Flag” by the comeback queens, All Saints, but we have only heard two tracks from it so far. The single “One Strike” has been racking up the plays this month, and I also love the new track which was released called “One Woman Man”. It seems that All Saints are back on their game and have brought back some 90’s R&B/Soul to the forefront. I cannot wait to hear the rest of the album when it is released, it will be the first time I have purchased music in such a long time (I stream everything nowadays). Will All Saints be #1 this time next month as well?

OK, so here is the big one. Which song is the screenshot featured at the top of this blog? Well, it’s a Eurovision song, and I do think that it is going to do very well indeed at the upcoming contest. The song is called “You Are The Only One” and it is sung by Sergey Lazarev, who is from Russia. The song is a typical Eurovision entry, but a good typical and not a cringe typical. The song has a great melody which you can’t get out of your head and it is also the bookies favourite right now. If you have been reading my blogs for some time, you will remember that this time last year “Heroes” by Måns Zelmerlöw did well in my charts, and he went on to be the winner. Will the same fate happen this year? You be the judge. For now though, let’s watch the stunning video…

You cannot deny that was great, and you were nodding your feet along too right? Is it my favourite Eurovision song this year though? That’s still to come in a forthcoming blog folks.

He may be #1 in my chart, but will he win Eurovision this year?

Anyway, here is the full Top 10 of the most played songs last month, crammed full of Melodifestivalen and Eurovision tunes.

  1. (NE) Sergey Lazarev – You Are The Only One – 92 plays
  2. (NE) All Saints – One Strike – 71 plays
  3. (NE) Amir – J’ai Cherché – 43 plays
  4. (⬇︎1) Rihanna – Work – 42 plays
  5. (NE) Margaret – Cool Me Down – 41 plays
  6. (⬆︎2) Jamala – 1944 – 40 plays
  7. (⬇︎5) Justs – Heartbeat – 40 plays
  8. (NE) Samra – Miracle – 40 plays
  9. (NE) Molly Sandén – Youniverse – 39 plays
  10. (NE) Robin Bengtsson – Constellation Prize – 38 plays

Are any of your favourites in there? 92 plays in one month is a massive amount of plays, that’s like about 3 times a day that song has been played. I obviously can’t get enough of it. Another mention to All Saints though who would have been #1 had it been any other month, “One Strike” is a great song and I really recommend you go and listen to it on Spotify or Apple Music if you haven’t already. There was a grand total of 3055 different tracks played last month which is also a new record for me, a lot of music has been listened to. I have also reached the milestone of 600,000 plays in total on my Last.FM, when will I hit the 700,000 mark?

As we go in to April, I am buzzed for yet another great month in music. I am going to not one, not two but three different gigs this month. I am seeing Years & Years, Muse and Troye Sivan at different venues and I am excited for all of them. There are rumours that the much anticipated Beyoncé album will drop this month too which will be a music event in itself. There will also be the official release of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 CD, so I predict right now that the full Top 10 next month will be jam packed full of Eurovision songs, or who knows? I enjoy my music, and I hope you enjoy reading about my music habits. If you have any musical suggestions, please get in contact as I would love to hear from you!

Until next time…
